Professional Certificate: Royal Conservatory of Music
My musical experience has been rich and varied. I’m a graduate of THE ROYAL CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC in Toronto. I also studied Jazz, Keyboard Harmony and Improvisation at THE NEW SCHOOL OF MUSIC and MOORPARK COLLEGE in Moorpark,CA. I was a professional musician as a keyboard player in a top 40 band. I went on to have a solo career as a lounge piano player in several restaurants. Composing songs has always been a passion for me. I was hired as resident composer and lyricist for the LEAH POSLUN’S THEATER SCHOOL, where I worked for 6 years. I also owned and operated my own talent agency called TROUBADORS UNLIMITED. There I composed music for many corporate shows. I enjoyed a career as a children’s musical performer for many years. I recorded several albums of original children’s songs. I Ran pre-school music programs through Rancho Simi Parks and Rec. I have been teaching piano and theory full time since 2003
I have been teaching full time since 2003. Because of my varied background, I am able to teach classical and pop. I am also very adept at teaching musical theory. Because of my background in performing, I am very good at teaching how to read lead sheets. I can also teach composition. My background as a children's musical performer makes me very comfortable teaching children. I am a certified Simply Music instructor. This is a playing based method of teaching where you teach students how to play before they start reading. This accelerates the learning process.
I am a certified Simply Music teacher. This is a playing based method where students learn how to play great sounding pieces before we start reading. I do however, start reading at the beginning. I use the Faber and Faber Piano Adventure books. I also incorporate the Simply Music approach. The simply music approach uses patterns instead of notes at the beginning. With a reading based method, you are restricted playing only pieces you are able to read. In a playing based method we can learn more complicated selections.
Every student is different. Therefore I gear the lessons towards the particular needs of each individual student. I have found that using my playing based method of teaching gives the student a lot more confidence because they're playing more interesting sounding pieces, using both hands from the get go. There are times that the playing based method is not appropriate for a particular student. If that is the case, I focus on a reading based method. I generally use both. We do the reading for half of the lesson and then learn songs by patterns for the other half.
