I have been teaching children and adults to play the piano for 30+ years and love it! I graduated from Taylor University with a bachelors degree in music. I majored in piano and minored in organ and voice. I have been certified by the Music Teachers National Association. I primarily teach @ Lane Music in Knoxville, Tennessee and I also teach @ my home studio in Maryville Tennessee. Several of my students perform in the National Federation of Music Clubs' festival and in the Tennessee State Music Teachers Associations' auditions. Currently I am secretary of the Music Study Club and the Knoxville Music Club. I also am currently treasurer of the Knoxville Federation Festival and the Knoxville Music Teachers Association.
I began teaching piano while I attended Taylor University. Afterward I taught piano in Fort Wayne, Indiana, for 2 years. Then I moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan and taught for 2 years there. Afterwards I moved to South Carolina and taught 16 years. I have been in Tennessee for 14 years and plan to stay! Teaching piano is my passion! There's nothing more that I would rather do. I teach students starting at age 6 to whatever age they want to take piano lessons. I currently have a student who is in her 80s She is a very good student and we have fun! I enjoy teaching students how to read music and make beautiful music on their piano.
For children just starting lessons I like to use either the Faber Piano Adventures or the Alfred Premier Piano Course. For beginning adults I use the Faber Piano Adventures Adult Method. I am eager to teach students whatever type of music they prefer in addition to the "classics". I research what music is available to best meet the needs and wants of the students. I have taught almost all of the Beethoven Sonatas, several Bach Preludes & Fugues, all Field Nocturnes, several Chopin Nocturnes, Mozart Sonatas, and various pieces by various composers from all periods of music.
One of my greatest joys in teaching is seeing the "light bulb" go off; to see the "aha" moment when a student understands a concept I have been teaching her/him. I enjoy watching my students achieve goals previously thought to be unattainable. I make every effort to individualize my teaching style to meet the needs and personality of each student. I continue to learn by reading various music trade magazines, attending workshops, meetings and conventions. I enjoy teaching various types of piano music.
