Overview:

I am a Chicago bassist and composer. In addition to playing bass in several of Chicago’s most compelling jazz groups, I have composed music for my own Octet and small groups. I am a member of Jason Stein’s Locksmith Isidore, Mike Reed Flesh & Bone, and Tomeka Reid Quartet. I studied privately with saxophonist and composer Roscoe Mitchell as well as legendary double bass pedagogue Stuart Sankey and jazz bassist Rodney Whitaker . In 2009, I was awarded the Fellowship in Music Composition from the Illinois Arts Council. Jason tours widely in the US and Europe. Point of Departure blog wrote an extensive interview and career overview.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching private bass lessons since 1990. I frequently teach workshops at universities and music schools all over the world including Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle, Hochschule der Künste in Bern, Switzerland and Bucharelli 69 in Mexico City. I have taught music technology for the Chicago Park District in the Inferno Mobile Recording Studio program. I am also an active performer and composer. I am currently an Artist in Residence at High Concept Labs in Chicago and played bass in the National Jazz Orchestra of France in 2018. I have taught at DePaul University Community Music Division, Old Town School of Folk Music, and Oak Park School of Music.

METHODS USED

In addition to teaching the physical aspects of playing the bass, I also focus on music theory, compostition, and ear training from the first lesson. I create my own lesson materials which establish the fundamentals of proper hand position and steady rhythm. We continuously strengthen those fundamentals, applying them by learning songs, scales and arpeggios, and exercises. Theory and ear training are integrated into the lessons so that the student can grow into a well-rounded, adaptable musician.

LESSON STYLE

I am always fascinated by the process of teaching and learning. I am constantly reevaluating my approach to the lessons and trying to improve my communication. Every student has their own unique needs and obstacles which I try to help them overcome and to teach the student how to recognize and overcome obstacles by themselves. I focus on the absolute fundamentals of music so that the student guide the specifics of the lessons to their own tastes and interests. I support students on their own journey in music.
