Overview:
I attended St. Olaf College for my undergraduate degree and did a Bachelor's of Music in Trumpet Performance and Bachelor's of Arts in Music Theory/Composition. After graduating in 2009, I volunteered for a year as a music teacher in rural Malaysia. Upon returning to the US, I did a Master's of Music at Eastman School of Music before working as a teacher and freelancer in Singapore for two years. I love playing and teaching all kinds of music!
EXPERIENCE
I've been teaching music since high school. Throughout college, I maintained a small private studio of trumpet students. After college, I taught piano, guitar, and general music as a volunteer teacher in rural Malaysia for one year. In graduate school, I instructed two courses of ear training every semester. Since then, I've been teaching all the brass instruments at various international schools in Singapore. Now, back in NY, I look forward to meeting new students!
METHODS USED
I often find that the method of teaching and practice is more important the the material being used. That being said, I think it is very important to develop strong fundamentals. I like to use time-tested standards, such as the Clarke and Arban's book. For younger students, their school band books usually suffice with some supplementation from my own library.
LESSON STYLE
I am a passionate and creative teacher. I love helping students discover their own talents and interests. I believe in helping students learn how to learn and to become their own best teacher. I like to work with what the students musical interests are, and build upon that.
