Overview:
I am a patient, enthusiastic instructor passionate about working with all kinds of students! In May 2023, I graduated from Boston University with a Bachelor of Music in Viola Performance and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. I took German all throughout college and have a 3+ year streak in German and Spanish on Duolingo! I recently performed with the Altschuler Summer Music Institute in Rimini, Italy through the Clare Hodgson Meeker Fellowship. In my free time, I like to take Brazilian Jiu Jitsu lessons, cook, study German and Spanish, and read comics.
EXPERIENCE
My experience in teaching has been consistent and rewarding. I started giving viola lessons as a junior in high school. In college, I took pedagogy classes where I had the opportunity to teach students through the Boston Youth Symphony Intensive Community Program. In June 2022, I earned my Teacher Training certification through the Suzuki Association of the Americas, which makes me qualified to teach the Suzuki Method. In addition to viola lessons, I am qualified to teach beginning to intermediate violin lessons. For my students, I always encourage them to enter competitions, perform in recitals, and play in front of their peers to reduce stage-fright.
METHODS USED
Since I am certified as a Teacher Training through the Suzuki Association of the Americas, I have adopted the Suzuki method, which is known as the "mother-tongue" approach. Like learning a language, constant exposure to music helps develop the skills necessary to play an instrument. As a current language-learner, I cannot stress being exposed to violin and viola pieces enough! It is a surefire way to develop ear-training skills, dictation skills, and eventually improvisational skills. I typically try to the use the Suzuki books, but I am open to any other option the student would like to start with.
LESSON STYLE
Each student is an individual first. Therefore, I create an individualized plan and approach for each student. It's also important to understand and master the fundamentals first, so each student will have a proper route carved out specifically for them in terms of what exactly needs to be worked on and improved. This will also develop self-awareness in the student, so that they can have the opportunity to take ownership of the lesson and their progress on the instrument. This, then, creates motivation to practice on their own. I want each student to feel empowered with the tools they need to guide themselves in their own practice time while using our lessons as a way to gain more feedback and clarity.
