I am a music lover who enjoys teaching others the nuances of the guitar and saxophone. I started playing the saxophone in the 5th grade and began the guitar in college. I took several music classes throughout college including saxophone, guitar, music theory, music appreciation and ensemble. I was in a band for 4 years playing bars and restaurants in Alaska. My saxophone style is very much solo based but much of what I play is harmonies as well. Music theory has taught me a lot about playing any and all instruments and I’d love to pass that along to you! Don’t worry I know how to teach the fun stuff of playing in a band too!
My musical background started 19 years ago when I began playing the saxophone in the 5th grade. I have continued playing the saxophone along with taking up guitar as well as tinkering with a few other instruments along the way. While attending APU I took music lessons with Eric Redding (look him up, he's an incredible musician and teacher here in Anchorage) that included intermediate and advanced lessons on the guitar and saxophone along with beginner lessons on the piano, drums and electric bass. Other notable classes were music appreciation, music theory and ensemble (where we formed a band and performed to the school itself!
My teaching style is very much based in what each individual student wants to learn. I don’t see the point of force feeding something that will just make the person no longer want to participate in the wonders of music. Scales are a large part of every good musician so I will attempt to make them fun and useful! Music theory for non majors is what I took in college and it is a much more open and less regimented form of learning the intricacies behind the theory. In other words my methods will be set the first day of class with each individuals wants and needs.
As I’ve already been mentioning my teaching style is best described as flexible and laid back. Every student is different and the rate at which one learns varies from subject to subject, song to song, genre to genre. I like to adjust with the student to fit their needs as well as allow them to enjoy all parts of music. Weather that me regimented scale procedures or just learning a pop song to show off to their friends I will accommodate to the best of my abilities! We will definitely be learning together.
