I’m a passionate and motivated instructor that loves working with students. I have 9 years of experience on the viola. I have taken countless of chamber festival and youth symphony orchestra auditions in my years. I have had the opportunity study under the tutelage of great musicians in my years of playing that teach at the top music institutions in the country. I have auditioned and got accepted at the New England Conservatory, University of Michigan SMTD, Eastman School of Music, and the Juilliard School. I have also performed the Walton Viola Concerto at Benaroya Hall in Seattle with my youth orchestra. I currently study at the Eastman School of Music with Grammy Award winning Masumi Per Rostad.
I have had four years of teaching experience starting in high school where I tutored for my youth orchestra and school orchestra, I am eager to share my knowledge and expertise with my students and help them develop their skills and love for music. I believe that a strong foundation in technique is crucial for any violist to reach their full potential, and I strive to make my lessons both informative and engaging for my students. I am also open to tailoring my approach to each student's individual needs and goals, whether they are interested in pursuing a career in music or simply playing for enjoyment.
I have taught for four years primarily using the Tuttle System and the Suzuki method. I am patient with my students and believe that anyone can become a great violist. I understand that it is difficult in the beginning and progress can be slow, but I encourage my students to keep chugging along. There is nothing more rewarding than accomplishing something as difficult as playing the viola. First and foremost, I prioritize establishing a strong foundation of technical skills. I guide my students through proper posture, bowing techniques, finger placement, and intonation, ensuring they master the fundamental aspects of playing the viola. I emphasize the importance of practice and provide effective strategies to help them overcome challenges and develop dexterity and control over their instrument. Therefore like to have my students play scales and etudes, with usually some Bach, a concerti, and a sonata if they have the time. I usually try to assess what the student wants out of their experience rather than throw whatever I want at them. My end goal is to make sure the student is having fun and enjoying the instrument.
As a viola teacher, my teaching style is characterized by a combination of technical precision, artistic exploration, and personalized mentorship. I believe in nurturing a supportive and encouraging environment where my students can thrive and develop a lifelong love for music. I also strive to inspire creativity and musical expression. I encourage my students to delve into the emotional depths of music and explore different interpretations. Together, we analyze the phrasing, dynamics, and nuances of each piece, aiming to create performances that resonate with both the player and the audience. I expose my students to a wide range of musical genres, from classical masterpieces to contemporary compositions, broadening their horizons and nurturing their musical versatility. Central to my teaching philosophy is the recognition that each student is unique, with individual strengths, weaknesses, and goals. I tailor my instruction to meet their specific needs, recognizing their progress and providing constructive feedback. I encourage open communication and dialogue, allowing students to voice their questions, concerns, and aspirations. By understanding their motivations, I can create personalized lesson plans that foster their growth and cultivate their musical identity. Beyond the technical and artistic aspects of teaching the viola, I see myself as a mentor and guide. I strive to instill discipline, perseverance, and a strong work ethic in my students, values that extend far beyond their musical journey. I aim to foster a lifelong appreciation for music, ensuring that they develop a deep connection with their instrument and continue to pursue their passion in the years to come.
