Overview:
I am a creative and innovative instructor who loves helping each student find their voice and pursue their unique interests musically.  I completed my Masters in Music at Northwestern University in 2015, where I was featured in many opera productions and directed several student produced operas.  I also sought to create and present exciting multimedia recitals that combined classical music with other art forms.  I have performed with prestigious summer programs both in the United States, such as the Aspen Music Festival, and internationally with such programs as Music in the Marche. For the last 3 years, I taught voice and piano lessons with Flatts and Sharpe Music Company in Chicago and have extensive experience teaching online lessons.
EXPERIENCE
I spent my graduate years teaching non-major voice lessons, which was incredibly exciting.  I worked with undergraduate students with completely different backgrounds and passions from pre-med to journalism to theatre.  Along with different interest academically, they also had unique musical tastes, so the repertoire for each student was tailored to their interests.  I want my students to work on music they are passionate about.  As a professional teacher with Flatts and Sharpe, I provided musical instruction for students of diverse backgrounds and interests, personalizing each lesson to the unique needs and personalities of each students. I am attentive to the emotional states of each student and utilize a balance of observation and adaptability in teaching lessons. Each student is unique, so getting to know them is paramount to making their lessons both fun and fulfilling. Even after working with the same student for years, I’ve learned to never settle into an expectation of what a lesson will be, as each day brings out different facets of their personality. I have learned to excel at flexible planning, creating a lesson plan around the trajectory we’ve been pursuing, but ready to alter my expectations if they bring something new to the table that day.
METHODS USED
I believe that the foundation of all singing in all genres is solid technique, so I heavily emphasize the essentials of breathing and supporting the air.  We will do this both through vocal exercises and the application of technique to repertoire both chosen by the student and reccomended by myself.  My main goal is for my students to be interested in and excited about what they are doing. Every lesson will begin with a vocal warmup to determine where a student's voice is on a particular day. This will be followed by working on music using afore-discussed techniques and troubleshooting the new challenges that appear in each piece.
LESSON STYLE
The most important aspect of my teaching is getting to know my students.  By doing so, I can find the best way for them to explore the amazing world of music.  It's important to set realistic goals for students so that they can always progress but also be excited about each victory along the way.  Half of each lesson will be spent on technique through warm up exercises, which we will then apply to songs. At the end of each lesson, a goal will be set for the next lesson and we will discuss particular elements to focus on for that week.

When I started working with Harrah, immediately I felt comfortable and assured; she was consistently forthright, encouraging and adaptive with her instruction. She embraced my goals and preferences while incorporating repertoire outside of my comfort zone to challenge me and further my aspirations as a singer. After working with her for the better part of 2 years, my vocal range and control improved significantly. Moreover, my confidence as a singer grew as well. As an amateur/beginner vocalist myself, I cannot recommend Harrah enough. She's present and listens attentively - a great instructor. Not to mention, her knowledge of music and the mechanics of singing is unquestionably well rounded and deep.

I studied piano with Harrah for close to 2 years. I always valued her ability to add understandable music theory to the discussion. I appreciated her willingness to assist me in my ongoing exploration of 21st century piano music. Her observations of my playing were helpful and informative.

Harrah was a great instructor! She was always patient with me. I learned a lot from her and did not realize all of the ways you can use your voice. She is very knowledgeable and encouraging.

Harrah was an AMAZING teacher! My son started with her a year ago in Chicago. He was 8 and had never had a piano lesson but loved music and had an ear for it. She encouraged his creativity and was very enthusiastic and explained things so that a kid can easily understand. He loved having Harrah as his teacher. Anyone that has her for a music teacher is very lucky!

I cannot say enough great things about Harrah! She is patient, kind, and a gifted instructor and musician. She always finds the positive in any student and works on growth. My daughter took both voice and piano with her and she was so incredibly flexible to my daughter's ever changing needs. As an educator myself, every lesson I saw Harrah apply tried and true techniques to instruct and it all came from a genuine and kind place. Harrah focuses on that small learning space between 'what's already learned' and 'what's to be learned' (aka frustration) to allow for structured and nurtured growth at my child's pace. Harrah is truly an outstanding and talented individual and anyone would be so lucky to have her as their teacher.

My daughter started piano lessons at 5yrs old with Harrah and immediately had a great impact. Harrah was patient, fun and constantly bringing a great attitude to piano. My daughter's skills are constantly improving and Harrah did an amazing job helping my daughter's confidence grow. I highly recommend anyone who's looking for an instructor to work with Harrah.

Harrah was a great teacher. She was always supportive and helpful if I ever was struggling with something, and she always pushed me to do my best. She helped me prepare for college auditions and get into some great programs! Whoever becomes a student of Harrah’s is lucky to have such a great, supportive teacher.
