I am a passionate music instructor who loves sharing my love and passion for music with my students. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Eastern Washington University in 2005. I received my Masters in Curriculum and Instruction from Western Governor's University in 2018. I have been teaching in the public school system for 15 years. I love singing and have performed for festivals and fairs in the state of Washington. I have endorsements in vocal music, instrumental music as well as general music. I have taught piano, voice, recorders and ukeleles. I am really excited to share my knowledge with students and hope to instill a passion for music in them.
My experience dates back to high school when I would sing in a number of different choirs, including jazz, concert choir and I participated in musicals. I sang in numerous competitions and festivals throughout high school and college. I began singing and playing the piano when I was 8 years old. I auditioned for America’s Got Talent as well as American Idol. My teaching experience began about 15 years ago when I received my teaching certificate. I have been teaching music continuously for the past 7 years. I have sent students to participate in an Honor Choir in Southwest Washington. I enjoy festivals and contests and putting on concerts.
I like to create my own lesson plans depending on the ability of the student. For a beginning student who is a child, Disney songs are a good choice. Depending on the style the student is interested in, first book of solos (s,a,t,b) and then second book of solos (s,a,t,b). Then I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate to the student’s genre interest. For adults, I find the student’s interest and instruct accordingly. No matter the ability of the student, I try to keep the lessons engaging.
The most important thing for students is to let them progress at their own pace. I set realistic goals. I also make my instruction engaging so the student stays interested. I keep my students engaged by finding out what inspires him or her. If the student is engaged, they are more likely to continue. I acknowledge all the accomplishments because that helps the student succeed and makes them more eager to learn. I think putting together a recital or concert is important because allowing the student to showcase his or her progress helps motivate as well.
