As a voice teacher, performer and composer I love getting to share my passion for voice with my students. I graduated from Bennington College with a degree in performance studies and have since worked with some of my heroes including 2-time drama desk award winner Robert Wilson as well as CocoRosie who have over 20 million streams on Spotify! Most recently I wrote and recorded all of the music for the Hangar Theatre's mainstage show "An Odyssey." I'm currently developing a musical at the Cherry Arts Space. Having experience in opera, musical theatre, contemporary/popular music as a writer and performer gives me so many tools and techniques to bring to my students. Additionally, my work in somatics and movement helps students understand the connection between their mind and body. This allows for a relaxed, confident, and unique voice. Style, tone, and technique are all achievable with the right tools!
I began studying voice at 10 years old and quickly began singing in musicals and on the local radio station "Crossroads." I studied performance studies in college which enabled me to explore different styles of singing and writing music as well as acting and somatic practices. I Have been teaching for 4 years. I began teaching while living in Ireland after a few friends who worked in musical theatre asked me to help them with specific problems (a tight throat, poor alignment, lack of technique, etc.) I realized I have such a love for this work and dove into the process. Teaching voice came naturally since I was already teaching sound and movement classes at several theatre and film businesses including Spotlight EU, the Blue Door, Pilot Light Studios, and Starcamp. I continue to teach group classes and currently work with Hangar Theatre and the Community Arts Partnership.
I offer a consultation to establish student goals - this helps to determine what methods may best support their progress. I utilize bel canto and evidence-based vocal pedagogy alongside voice and speech techniques like Kristen Linklater and Uta Hagen to form a foundational technique. This is paired with somatic practices like experiential anatomy and Body-Mind Centering (BMC) to make sure the student fully understand their process on an anatomical level. I find somatics help solve the problem of trying to recreate something by ear (if you know what it looks and feels like inside you're body there is much more control).
My objective is to support the student in whatever path they'd like to follow. I'm happy to help complete beginners who want to sing at Karaoke or want a very in-depth understanding of technique. I can prepare a pro-singer for their next single or an actor for their audition. I also love to work with people who see singing as a joyous and healing practice in and of itself. I keep a journal (that is accessible over google drive) so students can look back on their progress. I want to foster agency in my students. That means making sure they know why we're doing specific exercises, what skills they're training, and how to practice these skills by themself. I make sure they know how to warm up their voice and bring artistry and technique to their songs.
Emma got me back into my love of learning music! I was worried about taking online lessons, but her expertise of the body and voice transcends shared physical space. I don't remember a time when I felt more confident in my performing. I highly recommend Emma as a teacher.
