I received my formal education in flute performance at the Oberlin Conservatory (B.Mus) and California Institute of the Arts—CalArts (M.F.A.). I am an active freelance musician in the Los Angeles area. I also compose and sing and hugely value creativity both in my own work and in my student's work! I have experience performing with orchestras and small chamber groups, as well as performing electronic music and improvising. Whether you desire to become an orchestral flutist, win competitions, or just explore playing the flute, I will be excited to share my love of music with you!
During the past 15 years, I have taught students ranging from the earliest beginners to very advanced college flute majors. I have varied pedagogical experiences from working with young children with autism and dyslexia to teaching college flute majors. This diverse range of experience allows me to tailor my teaching to meet each individual student's goals. I find all levels of students to be equally challenging and rewarding! Previous private flute teaching experiences of mine include teaching at the Musical Achievement Program in the Toledo public schools, teaching secondary flute lessons at Bowling Green State University (BGSU), CalArts, and Oberlin, and substitute teaching flute majors at BGSU.
I discuss long and short term goals with my students at the beginning of each semester and we construct a plan together that balances technique work with passion projects. My goal is to help you meet your goals! I expect each student to come prepared to perform the previous week's lesson assignments. We will discuss together how much time you have to practice and how you can best manage your time to make the most progress. My job is to help you get the most out of your lesson experience!
I believe in a warm, supportive and student-centered approach to teaching. I want all of my students to become better musicians, better artists, and better thinkers as a result of their flute studies. For all students, but especially those aged 12 or younger, an open channel of communication between the teacher and parent is very important. While some children are very independent, it is my experience that many require parental oversight to encourage good practice habits. Every child is different, and I’m always happy to talk with a student's parent(s) in order to ensure that every student is progressing and enjoying their time learning the flute!
