Overview:
I am an enthusiastic, committed and empathetic teacher who believes that love of music knows no boundaries and can be a lifelong pleasure for everyone at their own level of application. I was fortunate to have a high school music teacher whose open-mindedness to all kinds of music – including what we, his students, listened to – influenced my future attitude to the art-form. In kind, my professional goal is always to get students to share my love of music which, in turn, they can pass on others. I also teach composition/arranging, theory, conducting, aural training, music technology (Sibelius) and how to accompany (piano) - which requires a different skill from solo playing. I also perform, compose and conduct.
EXPERIENCE
I am a professional musician with over 30 years of experience in a variety of practical, educational and academic artistic disciplines. I have taught piano to students of all ages, backgrounds and abilities, including special needs, such as visually impaired and autistic. During my career as a teacher, I have been fortunate to receive many comments - mostly positive! - from students and parents, such as: "Thank you for the great year of piano! Ava is enjoying her musical studies, and we are grateful for your inspiration." (Maryann L.)
METHODS USED
‘The musician’s art is to send light into the depths of people’s hearts.’ (Robert Schumann, pianist and composer). I still enjoy the thrill of enhancing a student’s appreciation of music and witnessing musical and personal growth as a result of the power of music. At university, I was fortunate to have an excellent piano teacher, whose philosophies I pass on to my students, often mentioning the wonderful "Mrs. Thomas". "Thank you so much for the lessons....I've been hesitating but you helped me to finally start the music path and bring back my passion." (Keehae P. - adult student)
LESSON STYLE
"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything." (Plato, Greek philosopher) Following the lesson pattern of my aforementioned piano teacher, Mrs. Thomas, my lesson ALWAYS (unless it's your birthday!) starts with a short music reading test, followed by pieces, technique work, scales, theory and aural training. I believe that the comments of the following parent sum up my teaching style: "Thank you for your patience, kindness and humor while teaching our two boys...and for being a great piano teacher!" (Minjae K.) "You have a great rapport with all your students—they are lucky indeed!" (Ann Y.)

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
