ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BA, New York University, Music Performance

Berklee College of Music, Music Performance/Music Production

Awards:

2016 - Maryland Entertainment Hall of Fame Inductee

Overview:

I attended Berklee College of Music in Boston prior to moving to Los Angeles.  There, I would work with some industry greats like Richard Druz, Lenny Greene and Frank Zappa.  I absorbed their skills, talents and techniques.  After singing with many bands in the area, I found gospel music and joined a church with Pastor Rowena Frisco in Inglewood.  Frisco taught me what gospel music was all about and I have carried it with me ever since. I returned to the East Coast to complete my  formal education at New York University where I received my BA in music performance. I formed a self titled band and toured the mid-Atlantic region performing a mixture of blues, rock, rnb, soul, gospel and jazz.  Hoping to reach a larger audience, I wrote, arranged, and produced my solo debut, What I Got To Say.  I am as dedicated to teaching as I am to performance.  I create an environment of support and encouragement allowing artists to feel nurtured.  I have a holistic approach to singing; it encompasses the mind, body and soul.  I welcome student participation and input during a lesson.  Instead of holding every student to the same measure, I chart success on attainment of your goals.  I recognize that every artist is an individual so success is dependent on individual goals challenged and attained.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for 20 years.  I am primarily a voice instructor as this is my principle instrument, but I do teach piano and guitar as well, with an emphasis on songwriting.  I feel that my ability to teach is demonstrated in the performance and progress of my students. I have a passion to teach music as I believe that it is an amazing form of personal expression at any level. It's amazing to witness the "AHA" moment when the student really locks into the song they are working on. Those moments stay with a person forever and I am so glad to be part of that process!

METHODS USED

Each student learns in a different way so I tailor each lesson plan for that individual. I do have a format with teaching voice that follows tradition - we work on voice exercises and then repertoire.  I use Hal Leonard, Alfred, and Mel Bay books for all instruments. Voice instruction is tailored to each student by taking their career goals, experience, and learning pace into consideration. Some things we will focus on are: vocal technique and correct breathing (the foundation), increasing vocal range, improving pitch and tone, vocal maintenance and endurance, stage performance and confidence, audition preparation, microphone technique, pre-production for studio recording and songwriting. Student repertoire will be selected to suit each student’s needs and goals.

LESSON STYLE

I love watching my students progress. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music ! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs..

Diana has been wonderful!! She has been encouraging and supportive. Learning to play the piano for the first time as an adult if certainly challenging but I have had success after success under Diane's guidance.

Diane's wonderfully encouraging attitude and simple approach to singing is exciting and super beneficial. I've seen massive amounts of improvement in only three rehearsals.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
