Overview:
I'm a certified music teacher who loves helping students progress towards their musical goals! I graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Illinois State University. I have over a decade of musical training, both vocal and instrumental. I am also fluent in French and have a lot of experience with the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), which means I greatly enjoy helping students to learn music in foreign languages! Some of my favorite musical experiences include singing operatic roles, performing in Carnegie Hall in NYC and Orchestra Hall in Chicago, and singing solos and descants with the Illinois Symphony Orchestra!
EXPERIENCE
I have been teaching music for almost a decade. I have taught everything from vocal and instrumental music to general music and music theory classes, both in group settings and 1-on-1. Although I greatly enjoy leading vocal and instrumental ensembles, both large and small, I love teaching private lessons because I can tailor each lesson to the individual student's needs. This allows the student to progress at a faster rate than they would in a group of students and also permits us to focus on the student's specific goals and interests. I know I have done my job when my students exhibit growth!
METHODS USED
When a student starts taking lessons with me, I first try to get a sense of the student's past musical experiences and current musical skills so that I can develop an individualized plan for the student, also taking into account the student's interests and goals. I believe every student is unique and hope to optimize the time we spend together through lessons that are customized to use their strengths to help build up their weaknesses. I use a variety of techniques, strategies, and mediums so that my students can become well-rounded musicians. When a student takes lessons with me, they will be learning how to play their instrument of choice, but they will also be learning music theory, music history, ear training, sight reading, technical skills, musical interpretation skills, and many more!
LESSON STYLE
Because I believe every student is unique, my teaching style depends on what is best for the student. Some students are kinesthetic learners who benefit most from using gesture, movement, and doing things hands-on, while others are aural learners who can pick music up by ear, but may struggle with reading music. This greatly influences how I go about planning and teaching lessons for each student. Their personality, interests, goals, and background experience also influence how I teach them. I use what I know and learn about my students in order to inform the teaching style that is best for them!
