Hi! My name is Denise and I was born in New York, grew up in the Midwest, discovered my love of music at age 5, and have been playing piano since that time. I graduated cum laude from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in Music focusing on classical guitar/piano performance, music theory, composition, and music business. After moving back to New York I earned my degree in audio recording and midi technology from the Audio Recording Technology Institute where I studied audio engineering and production. Over the years I have combined my talents, skills, and experience to compose, arrange, produce, and record two original studio albums which I promote online and through live performances. I have 20 years of experience as a piano instructor, providing guidance to students of all ages, styles, and abilities. My teaching philosophy is to create an enthusiastic environment where students can progress while still having fun. I tailor my lesson plans to help students deal with frustration, patiently guiding them toward effective learning patterns that achieve progressive goals and bring feelings of accomplishment, joy, and a love for music!

With 25 years of teaching experience in piano and guitar, I have successfully instructed students of all ages and diverse musical interests, spanning classical to rock genres. My expertise encompasses the development of comprehensive lesson plans, meticulous selection of course materials, and the preparation of engaging assignments. I specialize in introducing students to essential techniques such as hand positioning, finger transitions, and pedal use, fostering their musical growth. My commitment to effective communication with parents ensures they are well-informed about their child's progress. I take pride in my ability to tailor lesson plans, providing guidance that helps students navigate frustration, cultivate effective learning patterns, and achieve progressive goals, ultimately fostering a sense of accomplishment. I possess a strong aptitude for enhancing sight-reading, memorization, and piano techniques. My interpersonal skills shine through my ability to build rapport and read non-verbal cues, creating a supportive and conducive learning environment. I firmly establish a solid musical foundation by incorporating basic music theory into weekly lessons, infusing education with enthusiasm and a lighthearted, fun atmosphere. My teaching methodology encompasses classical, contemporary, music theory, and composition, allowing me to adapt lessons to each student's unique goals and interests.

METHODS USED

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Faber Piano Adventures. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire. For adults, I start with the Faber Adult Series as well as find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My teaching philosophy is to focus on listening first, which helps students learn to read music more effectively.

Witnessing a student's blossoming passion for music is truly a remarkable experience, and it forms the core of my teaching philosophy. I firmly believe that each student is on a unique musical journey, and it's paramount to nurture their individual progress. To achieve this, I adopt an approach centered on setting attainable milestones for every student during our lessons. These milestones serve as guideposts, allowing students to measure their advancement and celebrate their achievements along the way. Recognizing their successes not only boosts their confidence but also ignites a genuine enthusiasm for continuous learning. Understanding what motivates each student is a pivotal aspect of my teaching methodology. I take the time to delve into their musical inspirations, preferences, and personal goals. By doing so, I can tailor my instruction to align with their desires and needs, creating a personalized and engaging learning experience. This tailored approach ensures that students stay engaged and motivated and fosters a deep sense of ownership and connection with the music they're learning. Ultimately, my goal as an educator is not just to impart technical skills but to ignite a lifelong love for music within each student. This process involves not only nurturing their talents but also nurturing their curiosity, creativity, and confidence.
