I am a vocal teacher who loves working with students of all ages as I have done having taught high school and middle school as well as voice classes at the college level. I graduated from San Jose State University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1974 and earned a teaching credential thereafter. I earned a Master of Arts from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1996. I have taught high school and middle school choirs in both California and Washington. In that time period, I have personally performed solos with local symphonies, community choirs, and musicals.
I have been teaching voice classes and private voice lessons since 1976. I enjoy teaching all ages and delight in helping students develop their potential as vocalists and musicians while exploring the creative aspects of interpreting music of all styles. I encourage students to perform as frequently as they desire in recitals and competitions. I encourage students to compose their own songs. I enjoy working on one-on-one in lessons as well as small groups.
For beginning students, I start with simple songs of a folk or pop nature taking into accounts the student's musical interests. I also teach basic music fundamentals including rhythms and sight-singing (the elements of reading music). For experienced students, I begin with accessing their level and choosing repertoire that is suitable for their voice type as well as interests. Overall, I focus on making lessons fun and engaging while encouraging students to learn the discipline of music practice which will only serve to help the student progress.
It is so rewarding to see my students progress and enjoy their accomplishments. I encourage students to progress at their own pace by helping the student set personal goals. Knowing the students interests and skill level helps me determine the pace and music selections so that the student can be successful and have fun.
