Overview:
I can say without hesitation that music is what permeates my soul in every aspect of my life. I have been playing drums since age 5 and played my first professional, paying show at age 16. I come from a large musical family with professional, working musicians and teachers, music has been center stage in my life for as long as I can remember. As a working musician, I have been in country cover and original music bands, original and cover alternative rock bands, Neil Diamond cover bands, a band where TV theme show songs were re-engineered to play out at shows, I've been in wedding bands, original and cover progressive rock bands, and various projects on the local and regional music scene. I have been really fortunate to network in the music scene to meet so many different people that have welcomed me into a myriad of musical projects with widely differing styles. I've been very active as a working musician, playing small bars, large clubs, festivals, private and corporate events, wedding, and even VIP section shows at large venues with national acts. The expansive diversification of experience at different levels has thoroughly prepared my to know how to survive as a working musician and I passionately pass on this gained knowledge and experience with my lessons.
EXPERIENCE
I have 5 years teaching experience with private drum lessons. Most of my students have been younger and really craved the fundamentals of drumming I have the most experience teaching, which has honed my skills as a teacher to provide the foundation for more intermediate and advanced learning. What I believe makes me a comprehensive teacher is the fact that I myself have never stopped learning new things. No matter what level you are, advancing your skills and that moment of realization that you have while performing certain skills on the drum set you never thought you would get down is an indescribable feeling and I love nothing more than seeing other student drummers go through the same emotions. Right off the bat, we will both have at least one thing in common - we are both students of the drums and share a love for learning music. The feelings of accomplishment is what drives you to keep learning and reliving moments of new skill acquisition is the positive feedback loop one needs to constantly grow and never stagnate in being a student of any instrument and the language of music itself
METHODS USED
First and foremost, I teach to the comfortable speed of the student. Learning skill and permanent muscle memory is much more important that covering as much material as possible but then not grasping the concepts and motor skills. My main teaching style approaches beats and patterns in the simplest of actions, making sure the student is comfortable with those actions, then combining actions together, step by step as the student progresses until the student has the full understanding of the beat. This approach is the way in which I had mostly learned and it makes learning much more relaxing and fun, and this method is excellent for learning harder rhythms as it makes you understand all the fundamental actions within a complex drum pattern and you understand everything much clearer.
LESSON STYLE
I approach private music lessons centered around the student. Whether the student wants to learn a single song, a few different songs, or wants a complete ground-up experience starting with the most basic fundamentals, I can accommodate the students needs and wants. I will break beats down to the fundamental level and build from there in easy sections in order to comprehensively understand a specific rhythm, which makes learning much faster. I will also teach on the various parts and hardware of the drum set, what they do, how to fix/maintain them, and any other knowledge pertaining to knowing your kit and other percussion instruments intimately. Having been a working musician for 25 years, I will also teach how to approach all working situations, how to conduct yourself professionally, what to expect and not expect when you play out. I believe passing on the knowledge and experience of the working musician world is crucial for those new to performing out for the first time.
