I started to pick up a pair of drumsticks at 11 years old. Through a series of great teachers, one for Rock/Funk and the other for Jazz/Fusion, I became a proficient drummer. I graduated from Five Towns College Of Music in Seaford NY and taught my self to be a multi instrumentalists, but drums remained my passion. I played with many live bands of all styles while teaching students at home, local music stores and conservatories. Fast forward, I operate my own recording studio where I write, record and produce music for many national TV networks. I still teach drums and do drum recording sessions for other musicians and my own music. Please visit www.danielglickenmusic.com.
I have been teaching drums for about 30 years. I have taught in music stores, private homes, conservatories of music and my own home studio. I find that there is a delicate balance between students learning basic rudimentary drum knowledge and playing behind a full drum set. I try to incorporate both avenues of drumming while keeping lessons exciting. My students are encouraged to enter school bands, competitions and NYSSMA registration. Students can gain a great deal of confidence and respect in dealing with competitive musical programs, no matter how well they do.
All of my beginning student will learn stick control, the basic rudiments of drumming and music reading fundamentals. They will start off playing on a practice pad. For fun, I like to let my beginning students also get the feel of practicing on a real drum set, even if they are just learning basic snare drum techniques. I basically start with Stick Control For The Snare Drummer, then move on to Syncopation For The Modern drummer. Depending on the student's progress, I will make a decision on what route to go next. The student's preferred style of music and eagerness to learn will help in the future lesson plans.
The most important part of teaching, is seeing that the student is enjoying the lessons and interaction. If the student is not happy, I am not doing my job. My approach to learning is simple. Each student will have a plan, individually tailored to him or her. While Practicing is important, there is no reason why it shouldn't be fun. My students will be exposed to many types of music styles during lessons and the student will be able to choose which genres he or she would like to work on further. I do not believe in the same old way of teaching, incorporating students only into Classic Rock or what's trendy on the radio. There are dozens of genres to study.
Danny is an awesome teacher. He taught me all of the songs I needed to play for my band.
Daniel is killer! He taught me a couple of my favorite songs in just a few hours and gave me professional tips. I’m thinking about bringing my son next time.
