Overview:
I am a professional drummer/composer/educator living in NYC. I grew up in Dallas, Texas and began playing classical piano at age 4. I was given a drumset when I was 9 and switched to drums full time when I was 11. After high school, I attended University of North Texas to pursue a Bachelor of Music degree in Jazz Performance. In 2011, I moved to Brooklyn to perform full time. I later decided to go back to school and completed my Master of Arts degree in Music Performance at City College of New York. While at City College, I had the opportunity to teach at the college for two years, both as a teaching assistant and a guest lecturer. Now, I perform regularly in the NYC area, compose original music, and am a dedicated educator.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching music while I was in high school to younger students. Once I began college, I discovered that I really enjoyed teaching music and had a gift for verbally communicating complex musical ideas in an easy fashion. After moving to New York, I opened my own private studio and began teaching full time. I have experience teaching people of all ages and experience levels; ranging from beginners, to college students, to professionals, and I love all of it. The more I teach, the more I find that it helps me understand concepts just as much as my students! I love watching my students make breakthroughs in their practice and I love seeing the joy that music can bring everyone.
METHODS USED
For beginning students, we initially tackle the fundamentals of music and drumming. This includes how to properly hold the sticks, basic reading skills, music terminology, rudiments, and stickings. I also teach one or two drumset beats in the first lesson to show the student that playing drums is for everyone. After the student begins to understand the fundamentals, I structure a tailored lesson plan that addresses their areas of interest. This can include some method books, but the majority of the material will be provided by me. We will tackle topics like developing a strong sense of time-keeping, technique, playing with recordings, analyzing recordings, and developing drumset skills. We will study the pioneering drummers of the past and gain a deeper understanding of music through their recorded work.
LESSON STYLE
I am aware that the abilities and goals of each student vary, which is why I work to tailor a lesson plan structured around each student as an individual. While you will be professionally trained on the drumset and studying the fundamentals of music, you will also be encouraged to have fun and learn what most interests you. . We will listen to recordings and talk about music while I learn what inspires you. After I understand the level you are at, we can talk about a plan for attaining goals in our lessons.

Colin really knows what he's doing. He asked a lot of smart questions about what I wanted to help tailor the lessons for what I wanted to get out of them and then provided a lot of choices along the way for which way to go and how to learn and remember the lessons best. I'm continuing with Colin until I reach my goals!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
