Hello, my name is Christian and I love teaching music to students and being apart of learning. in may of 2020, I will have graduated from Lincoln College with a Bachelors in Contemporary Jazz Studies. I have performed all through-out the Lincoln and Logan county with great experience as a band leader, composer, and private instructor while still maintaining a GPA of 4.0. Most of my students have gone off and started bands in all areas of music from classical to jazz to rock and other styles of music. I have had the opportunity to work with Orbert Davis of the Chicago Jazz Philharmonic and hold a composition class. I have worn multiple awards for both trombone and piano. After recording my own music, I fell in love with teaching and have been teaching ever since my freshman year in college.
My experience with teaching music began on my college campus when the students came up to me asking me to teach them certain songs to play. I did this for a small fee and got them prepared to play it live in front of friends and family. Soon after that, my adviser had me help lead the student teacher program at the Logan county park district and we started off with 6 students and now we have over 8 students for each student-teacher in our program and now we have more online material for the students. Doing this type of work awoken a love of teaching music and I just knew that I want to spend my life teaching students to love music and their craft for years to come.
For students who are just starting to play music, I make it a obligation to learn all of what they know about music and try to build from that. I teach all the basics first for the students and give them challenges to complete while in the lessons and give them work to complete while at home. I make sure to include the parents in the lesson so that the student has a strong support system both during the lesson and at home. As they progress to a point that I feel is comfortable for them to handle, I ask the student what music they love to listen to and bring it in and have them remember the basics while they are just playing their favorite songs.
Nothing in this world is more rewarding than seeing a student achieve. I take on an approach that makes sure that student is both having fun and learning hard material that is hard to grasp. I make sure that the students have their own personalized lesson where learning the basics of both trombone and piano is encouraged and made into a way that they will remember that they had fun while learning. I make sure that the student has a grip on the material without ever making them feel like the material is a little too hard for them to understand. When they are laughing, they are learning and what better way to learn than to have fun with it? I incorporate dancing, poetry and all other art forms to teach and the students gravitate to that and use what they learn in our lesson to write their own music and go off to have fun doing so.
