I am a band director and private lessons teacher in the Columbia/Lexington area that is passionate about helping students become the best person through music that they can be. I graduated in 2016 with a Bachelor in Music Education and Euphonium Performance from Winthrop University, where I studied euphonium with Dr. Douglas Black. As a band director, I teach beginner band students, and maintain a working knowledge of all woodwind and brass instruments. I have performed with the Winthrop University Wind Symphony, the Palmetto Concert Band, and the South Carolina Phihamonic.
I have been teaching private and group lessons for over 6 years, and I teach multiple brass and woodwind instruments. I started teaching private lessons in 2012, and only taught euphonium and trombone lessons to middle and high school students preparing them for region band auditions. I have taught private lessons at various middle and high schools in both the Columbia area, and at schools in Rock Hill and Charlotte, NC. I encourage all my students to challenge themselves musically, and attempt to approach music in a fun, yet rigorous way. I am able to teach students at all ages at different performance levels, from beginner to advanced!
For beginning lessons students, I combine different materials from method books, traditional methods written for their specific instruments, and pieces of music written for their experience level. For advanced students, I introduce more solo literature that will challenge them musically and technically, but will allow them to embrace their musical abilities. I always allow student input, and am more than willing to work on music picked out by students that they enjoy playing. I always strive to make lessons engaging and challenging, and also discuss efficient ways to practice and grow as a musician.
I approach teaching music as building skills as a person first, and music follows. Teaching music means teaching confidence, determination, perseverance, and concentration. I work on all of these skills with my students, and how they relate to playing an instrument. Although I believe in challenging my students to go above and beyond, I also teach at a pace that is comfortable and appropriate for each individual skill level. I have experience teaching children from kindergarten, up to high school and adult students, and can change my instructional methods quickly depending on student needs.
