ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

BA - Music - UC Santa Cruz (Piano/Percussion)

MA - Music - UC Santa Cruz (Conducting)

Overview:
I have been teaching prviate music lessons in since 2008.  Currently I am only teaching remotely.  I currently teach piano, percussion, voice, theory, conducting, and eartraining.  Several of these will overlap during a student's curriculum over the years.  I also strongly encourage students to listen to music frequently and see live performances when they are able.  I incorporate music history and music theory into many lessons as well. When I am not teaching private music lessons, I work as the advanced music theory instructor and general music faculty at Cabrillo College. I also serve as the music director of the Unitarian Universalist Church of the Monterey Peninsula.
EXPERIENCE
I work with my students at the level and pace that they are comfortably happy. We all come to music and music lessons for different reasons. My work is to honor that space and demonstrate that making music is an option for anyone who wants it, regardless of any perceived “barriers” in place. I am currently learning and researching models of Universal Design for Learning. I apply as many techniques as possible to engage with students and make the music both cognitively appropriate and musically enjoyable. I also encourage students to explore styles and techniques they might not otherwise, as I know that exposure to a variety of musical experiences will offer multiple opportunities to understanding.
METHODS USED
For most of my beginning piano students, I use the piano adventures series. They offer a clear and well paced curriculum with numerous supplemental resources in a variety of styles. For beginning music theory, I use the Berklee School of Music texts or the Benward and Saker textbooks as well as many videos and other resources to explore musical concepts. For singing, I use a variety of sight singing books, all depending on the age and experience of the student. Depending on the style of songs a student wants to learn, I use various texts or musical resources for students. These may include jazz charts, lead sheets, choral repertoire, or various recordings and videos. For percussion, I teach using my own rhythm packets.
LESSON STYLE
My lessons are student driven. I typically assign some technique, repertoire, and theory assignments each week. I often try to include a “student challenge” most weeks in order to gauge how much a student is understanding during the lessons. I modify my styles based on what seems most effective for the student. Sometimes a student really needs 5 pieces to work on over a longer stretch of time. Other times, a student can only reasonably work on one piece for the week. I always check in with the student at the beginning of the lesson and always ask the student how they feel about the workload at the end.
