Overview:

My name is Bree. I've been drumming since I was 12 years old and haven't looked back. My passion for music sparked with jazz, but I am classically trained in percussion. I joined my middle school jazz band and traveled the state performing at MPA and with the All County Jazz Band in 2008. Transitioning to high school, I was very interested in marching percussion. Snare drum became my favorite instrument, earning me the title of the first freshman female snare drummer in 2010. The Timber Creek Regiment is a well recognized and successful band program in Orlando, FL. I became center snare in 2008 and percussion captain in 2009. I was accepted into the Florida State University in 2010, and became a part of the Big 8 Drumline snare line. Between 2010-2014, the Marching Chiefs performed at various social events, football games, fundraisers, parades, soccer games, volleyball games, basketball games, etc. And separately, the Big 8 Drumline performed at more events solo.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching since high school. Being a part of a rigorous music program at Timber Creek High School offered me opportunities to learn with successful percussionist, like Brett Kuhn. I performed at my first drum clinic in 2008 alongside the Timber Creek Regiment Drumline. After the clinic, many students looked at me in awe, asking my background. I felt so proud to be seen as a professional at such a young age. So i bought my first jazz drumset and offered lessons to students of all ages. I enjoy teaching anyone willing to learn!

METHODS USED

Before approaching any instrument, I would evaluate the depth of my student's stick control and basic technique, regardless of their age or experience level. I feel teaching students the musicality of percussion is imperative. Some people just think drumming is simply wailing on a surface as loud as possible. This is only half true :). I would discuss the importance of musicality and explore the different ways to portray music. Drummers are also musicians. We just have many different surfaces to play on, and it's mind blowing!

LESSON STYLE

I let my students determine their own pace. I want my students to be comfortable around me, whether if they have a question or just are curious about something. Sometimes a lesson could be a simple jam session. You can learn with a plan, or get the creative juices flowing with a nice easy jam sesh. What I love most about drumming is the endless rhythms and sounds the world has to offer. I might teach a student how to feel a rhythm by playing on top of a table, or even an old cooking pot. Flip the trash can upside down and we got a nice bass ready to go! The world is my classroom. Which means I'm learning something new everyday too!
