Overview:
I am very passionate and have a deep appreciation for every aspect of music. I have been a musician for a little over 20 years, and like many others, I have grown up surrounded by music. I have been singing for 25 years, playing piano for 21 years, and playing percussion for 19 years. I have been in various choirs (concert, gospel, symphonic, and jazz), and bands (concert, symphonic, jazz, orchestra, percussion ensemble, rock/folk). I graduated from North Central College with a BA in Music with an emphasis on percussion performance and music composition. While there, I performed in various venues with various ensembles. I performed and lectured during my senior composition recital, and I also governed over VOP Gospel Choir as the President for 4 years. Music is my life, and I am thrilled that I am able to share my love of music with others and help them make it a part of their world.
EXPERIENCE
I am new to the teaching world, as I have just started professionally about a year ago. I gave piano and percussion lessons in-home for beginners. I started substitute teaching piano, voice, and percussion during my last term of college. I then started teaching on my own in-home and online. I like to instill music theory practices and technique for that specific instrument that I am teaching. In my experience, especially with the younger set, mixing the more modern pieces with classical techniques really seems to press things forward. If they can relate to it, they better understand it. Overall, the student needs to have fun with it!
METHODS USED
I like to use a varied method for every individual student. I like to take the first lesson to feel out what they may already know or not know, their personalities, what learning methods may or may not work with them, etc. One thing that I teach to all of my students is music theory, no matter what level they may be at musically. After the first lesson, I put together a lesson plan that will work for the student that will include worksheets, exercises from a book for their instrument that I will pick out, and a piece for them to practice that either I will pick based on their level of playing, or that we pick together. No matter the level they are at, I like to keep things open and fun. Different musical activities, stickers or little prizes will be given out to acknowledge their achievements. I would also like to film the students playing the piece(s) they have been practicing to post on the website to showcase their progress, with the permission of the parent or guardian of course.
LESSON STYLE
I like to use the first lesson to figure out what method really works for each student individually. No matter the level, I make sure to teach music theory along with the techniques of said instrument. Scales, ear training, fingering patterns (for piano), rudiments (drums and percussion), vocal exercises, breathing techniques (for voice), and more! With kids or younger students, I like to start with the basics in music theory to give them a strong foundation. With adults, I always ask and/or test where they may be musically, and go from there. With all my students, no matter the age, I ask what their musical goals are in order to better guide them.

Brianna is very patient with my two girls. She is a very good teacher and I have really seen an improvement with their singing. They are more confident now than when they first started.
