I've taken several music history and music theory courses throughout my high school and college studies and have also done a lot of 'self taught' and 'self study' in the realm of music, particularly in Songwriting, mixing and producing my own songs, and even 'cover song' work on many great guitarists. I enjoy listening to & playing Rock music, ranging from the 'classic rock' through the grunge and alternative rock music. I also love Blues music a lot, Blues-rock and 'jam band' music. I was taught by a notable Jazz guitarist during my early college years who imparted a good deal of guitar chord and scale voicing knowledge to me.
I've got several years of in-studio Lessons with 'Leechford', and 'Steve and Friends' Music out of North Carolina, and even a few years with the well-known 'School of Rock' music studios out of both North Carolina and Virginia, I've loved my work over the many years teaching students ranging to nearly all age ranges. Instrumentalism is my specialty, but I very much enjoy composing and writing my own songs- even singing and mixing / producing music! I've been involved in a handful of bands from the age of 13 to my late 20s! Guitar and Drums are my primary instruments, but I've got over a decade of experience on bass guitar, vocals and songwriting.
I'm comfortable teaching from Beginner through Intermediate and onto Advanced levels in Drums and Bass Guitar. I can even teach through the expert levels reliably on Guitar- Steel-string acoustic, and Electric guitar styles - some fingerstyle, but not pure Classical guitar styles. I do a '50-50' method, 50 percent spent reinforcing and going over your music studies with written, theory-based materials. The other 50 percent is usually 'by ear' music training, Improvisation techniques and co-dependency 'jamming' on your instrument. Improvisation techniques are my teaching specialty, giving the student time on both 'rhythm' improvisation and 'lead/accompaniment' improvisation. This can go for not just guitar, but my other instruments Bass guitar and Drums as well.
I've been both self-taught and I've had instructors over the many years. My main instructor on Guitar was 'Greg Hyslop' in my early College years at Guilford College. Mr. Hyslop even had the pleasure of being involved with Dizzy Gillespie's band and song performances over his early career! He taught me 'Jazz guitar' techniques and chords even, and I used that knowledge to bolster my passion and experience in Blues and Rock musics. I usually incorporate a small amount of written material and theory into my lessons, unless the student specifically requests against this. However, I also use Improvisation techniques, Chord-play and chord charting for guitar, along with learning 'scales' on both Bass guitar and Guitar. For teaching Drums, I teach a lot of Rudiments, along with the Drumset styles of play, of course.
