I'm an enthusiastic teacher who is eager to share the love of music in and around my hometown. I received my Master of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and my Bachelor of Music degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts in Winston-Salem. I have performed across the country and also in Canada, Luxembourg, and Spain. I currently perform and teach as a freelance musician and I also play in the Rock Hill Symphony Orchestra. Most recently, I completed a fellowship at Lincoln Center Education in New York City. It was there that I co-founded Pinwheel, an ensemble of classically trained musicians and theatre artists. We had our debut performance at Lincoln Center with an original shadow puppet play with live music. I am so excited to be back in my hometown of Augusta so that I can share all that I have learned and experienced through my travels. In addition to playing the flute, I love to run and cross-stitch in my free time.
I began teaching privately in 2012. I have worked with students from the very beginning who had no flute experience to very advanced students. I love teaching a diverse range of ages and abilities because I feel that we all have something very special that we bring to music. I have taught privately in one-on-one settings and also with many students at once in band classrooms. I also was a teacher at the New York City Department of Education's Audition Bootcamp, which is a summer program designed to assist middle school students with the auditioning process.
I typically like to structure my lessons in the following parts: tone production, scales/technique, studies, and repertoire. This structure will vary with each student depending on their proficiency and interests. I believe that a good sound is the very basis of flute playing. During this portion of the lesson, we focus on how to produce a good quality sound that is unique to each student. Everyone has a unique voice that should be encouraged and developed.
After we are warmed up with a good sound, I like to go over scales and other technical patterns that involve the fingers so that students can learn to play with more ease. Often, I will speak about healthy habits to practice with our bodies such as stretching, taking breaks, and playing with good posture. Next we will focus on a musical study that "drills" a particular skill that may be relevant to the music the student is working on or to work on a particular challenge they are working to overcome. Finally, I like to devote a large portion of time to working on a musical piece. This is where we incorporate all that we have worked on in the lesson. I want my students to enjoy the music they work on and always take their preferences into consideration when finding pieces to assign them. I have created some of my own materials that I will provide to my students. I also enjoy working from methods that the student may already own. I know that lessons are an investment; I try to keep the additional cost of materials very low. I believe we can always find something to work on. Please let me know before you purchase anything so that I can review it to make sure your hard earned money will be spent well!
My teaching style is nurturing while pushing students to achieve their fullest potential. I am very encouraging of my students and love to acknowledge their accomplishments. Nothing is more fulfilling to me than to see my students enjoying themselves and recognize their own progress. I ask my students a lot of questions and encourage them to do the same. While I firmly believe in educating students on the foundations of good flute playing, I also am very open to allowing my students to work on the type of music that excites them.
