Overview:

I am a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where I received both my Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance and my Masters of Music in Vocal Pedagogy. I have extensive stage and recital experience in both musical theater and operatic repertoire. My musical theater experience includes rolls such as Sky Masterson in Guys and Dolls and Senex in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. During my time at UNCG, I sang the roles of Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors, which I also sang with the Durham Children's Choir. I also sang the roles of Gabriel Von Eisenstein in Die Fledermaus, The Defendant in Gilbert and Sullivan's Trial by Jury, along with participating in the ensembles in The Mikado, L'Enfant et les Sortilege, L'Enfant Prodigue, and Cendrillion. I also sang Timothy in Help, Help The Globolinks!, the First Slave in The Magic Flute, and participated in the ensemble of La Traviata with Greensboro Opera. I have studied voice with Ms. Cheryl Dobson, Dr. Donald Hartmann, and Dr. Robert Wells.

EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching privately for the past 5 years in the Greensboro area with students being admitted into special high school musical arts programs. I was also on faculty at the Chapel Hill School of Musical Arts for the 2013-2014 school year. I have experience teaching classical, musical theater, and contemprary styles of singing. As a teacher and mentor, I strive to teach each of my students to be a complete vocal musician. By this, I mean a vocal musician who has complete mastery of all aspects of a fully trained, confident, and competent musician. This includes knowlede of vocal production, musicianship, music history, and music theory. It is my job as a teacher to teach each student how to control their instrument and make the most beautiful sound. I also strive to engage each student in the history and theory of music. These tools are the fundamentals of music and therefore must be a component of a complete vocal musicians training. Musicianship is the creative aspect of each musical artist. It is developed and discovered through the training process. I believe that discovery is the greatest tool I have to help unlock the innate creativity in each student. Discovery is beneficial to both the student and teacher because through discover we can only continue to learn how to sing and how to teach!  All of my students are encouraged to have fun, enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on any style of music they prefer to sing!

METHODS USED

I do not have any one method I use while teaching. If I feel that a student needs a certain book, I will ask the parent and/or student to purchase that book. My approach to teaching is very straight forward. I meet the student where they are at and we move forward from there. I also believe in body awareness, so our lessons will consist of body movement exercises. The student is encouraged to come to each lesson dressed comfortably to allow for body movement and free air flow. After the inital lesson we will begin to introduce solo repertoire into the lesson. At this point, I may ask for the parent and/or student to purchase music as needed.

LESSON STYLE

As stated above, my teaching style is very straight forward. It is important that each student feels comfortable moving at their own pace. I will push each student in their lessons to become better musicians and singers. I believe in body awareness, so dress comfortably. Each lesson will consist of vocal warm-ups and technique work during the first half of the lesson. During the second half of the lesson we will work on repertoire and apply the technique to the music. It is my goal to help each student feel comfortable in the studio, with themselves as musicians and singers, and for them to leave each lesson having learned something.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
