Overview:
I am a curious and patient instructor who loves helping students discover more about music and their own sense of creativity. I recently finished up a production of Brigadoon with Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre, and I am currently an artist with Opera Santa Barbara. I am coming to you from the Chicago School of Music where I taught voice and piano, and I am so excited to be in California for the first time! I graduated with my Masters of Music from the Chicago College of Performing Arts and my Bachelor of Arts from the University of Northern Iowa. I am a firm believer in the idea that we never stop learning, and as such, I study with renowned Metropolitan Opera Tenor, Allan Glassman.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching privately about four years ago, and since then I have taught for a variety of well established institutions like the British International School and the Chicago School of Music. I have also worked as a teaching and outreach artist with Sarasota Opera and Old Capitol Opera. I love working with beginners, because I believe that music is for everyone, and it is important to find the right avenue for each individual. I am also a licensed yoga instructor, so I teach from a place of body awareness, which I feel really helps new students especially tune into and fine tune their technique. I also incorporate music theory into all of my lessons to help students become fluent in the musical language.
METHODS USED
For piano, I work from the Faber books for both youth and adult students. For piano students who are looking for more technique and artistry work, I supplement with the Hanon exercises. For all of my students, I like to set goal pieces to mark progress, and so students can put to practice the ideas we discuss in lessons on music they truly enjoy. Finally, I love for my students to keep a practice journal for reference on concepts we introduce, to keep assignments all in one place, and to track progress.
LESSON STYLE
My teaching style caters to each students’ needs, because each students’ background and understanding of music is unique. I believe it is important that we work together to develop a method of approaching the music that makes each student feel successful. My teaching often involves physical exercises as well as musical, aural, and theory exercises to give the student a well-rounded base from which to approach the music that excites them. I have found that putting these building block in place is essential not only for each student to have fun making music, but also to feel confident going out into the world beyond our lessons and being a musician.
