I was the music teacher at Tongass School of Arts and Science in Ketchikan Alaska before Covid-19 changed things. I have directed a beginner band and elementary school-wide concerts with preschool-6th grade musicians. I have performed as a choir member under Maestro Malfatti at Carnegie Hall. I also have written, directed, composed music for, and acted in a murder mystery called Manor Mayhem. I have recently move to the Portland area, but I have taught students virtually in Canada before and am open to teaching students in different time zones this way.
I have taught private music lessons for 8 years, ESL students for a year, and music students at various schools in multiple countries. I believe in teaching music through culture and create individual lesson plans for my private students.
I create relevant individualized lessons plans based on my students' interests and learning goals, experience and abilities. Students or a guardian will initially be given a questionnaire to determine the current level of student knowledge and skills. I provide reference material, recommend musical exercises/homework for my students, and can look into performance opportunities for students upon request.
I utilizes Australia's Aboriginal 8 Ways Pedagogy in lessons: story sharing, non-linear (no one learns the same thing at the same place), non-verbal (hands-on), land links (take it outside), deconstruct/reconstruct (look at overall concept before breaking it into steps), symbols & images, learning maps (written or draw connections showing what you have learned and what you struggle with), and community links (sharing music with others).
