Overview:
I am a dedicated music teacher based in southern California who loves spreading my love for music with other students.  I graduated from Indiana University with a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance with an outside area study of jazz improvisation.  I've been fortunate enough to tour the country including a performance in Carnegie Hall in New York city.  I currently play and write music with multiple groups as a percussionist, drummer, vibraphonist, and steel drummer in the Indianapolis area.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my senior year of high school 10 years ago.  My mother is a teacher, and got me my first job tutoring math for one of her teacher's assistants.  During the first couple of years, I had a number of math and music students and learned the benefit of tailoring my teaching methods to the individual rather than using a one size fits all teaching approach.  I try to listen to the student's interests and skills so that I can develop a practice routine that is both fun and beneficial for them specifically.  I also have found that the best teachers that I have had, exposed me to music that I would have never discovered on my own.  I believe that students should both enjoy their lessons and their practice.  I also firmly encourage them to perform and create their own original projects so that they are really experiencing and benefiting from their newly learned strengths.
METHODS USED
I have a few different methods depending on a students interests.  A majority of my current students study concert and/or marching percussion with me. With either of these styles, I like to start by developing their sense of timing, reading, and technique. For this, I use a combination of the Mitchell Peters books in addition to packets that I've developed over the past 10 years. My more advanced students work with me on their Solo and Ensemble repertoire in addition to preparing for college, honor band, and drum corps auditions.
LESSON STYLE
The best feeling for me is to see a student develop their own passion for music.  Therefore I do not believe in forcing a student to progress at a certain pace.  That said, I like to develop skill sets to a very strong level before moving forward to new skill sets.  I am a firm believer in acknowledging progress and positive reinforcement.  Above all else, I believe the students goals and interests are truly what guides the lessons.  I may explain and design a path for the student, but it all comes back to the destination that they desire.
