Overview:
I am a dedicated music teacher based in southern California who loves spreading my love for music with other students.  I graduated from Indiana University with a Master of Music degree in Percussion Performance with an outside area study of jazz improvisation.  I've been fortunate enough to tour the country including a performance in Carnegie Hall in New York city.  I currently play and write music with multiple groups as a percussionist, drummer, vibraphonist, and steel drummer in the Indianapolis area.
EXPERIENCE
My teaching experience dates back to my senior year of high school 10 years ago.  My mother is a teacher, and got me my first job tutoring math for one of her teacher's assistants.  During the first couple of years, I had a number of math and music students and learned the benefit of tailoring my teaching methods to the individual rather than using a one size fits all teaching approach.  I try to listen to the student's interests and skills so that I can develop a practice routine that is both fun and beneficial for them specifically.  I also have found that the best teachers that I have had, exposed me to music that I would have never discovered on my own.  I believe that students should both enjoy their lessons and their practice.  I also firmly encourage them to perform and create their own original projects so that they are really experiencing and benefiting from their newly learned strengths.
METHODS USED
I have a few different methods depending on a students interests.  A majority of my students are interested in the fundamentals of reading music so I usually start with the Alfreds Drum Method books for rhythm and the Mitchell Peters Fundamental Methods for Mallets books for reading melody.  Once the fundamentals are developed, I begin to introduce solo and ensemble repertoire.  As students advance, I work with them on creating their own individual voice while also preparing them for whatever other musical performances, auditions, and competitions that they have in their lives.
LESSON STYLE
The best feeling for me is to see a student develop their own passion for music.  Therefore I do not believe in forcing a student to progress at a certain pace.  I believe that a student should learn a concept as deeply as they would like to before advancing to the next concept, therefore instilling a strong grasp on the music that they know.  I am a firm believer in acknowldeging progress and positive reinforcement.  Above all else, I believe the students goals and interests are reall what guides the lessons.  I may explain and design a path for the student, but it all comes back to the destination that they desire.
