ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:
Bachelor Degree: Music Education - Five Towns College
Overview:

My name is Andre Lyles, and I'm an electric bassist based in Asheville, NC. It's important to me that in being the best teacher possible to all of my students that they succeed musically in all they do! I'm a goal-oriented, passionate, and motivated individual who thoroughly believes learning music should be fun and easy! I earned my Bachelor’s degree in Music Education in 2011 which has helped me to be able to facilitate a great career in teaching as well as performing. I have been able to travel the world performing for a variety of artists and bands with the help of my long prior performance background of 20+ years. Being able to perform to large crowds, travel around the world, and teach are my favorite ways in being able to share the gift of music. I help my students to find self-motivation, so that they will be able to watch themselves grow as musicians. I enjoy helping budding musicians to achieve self-confidence in playing their instrument(s) as well by creating as many musical performance experiences as possible and encouraging them to see live performances. My goal is to instill the passion, drive, and energy that music has brought into my own life into the lives of others. I want to be a part of my students’ musical journey. I want my students to feel proud of their musical successes and teach them all that I can while constantly reminding them that you can do and achieve anything you put your mind to. "Success follows doing what YOU WANT to do."

EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience begins back in my college years as I initially began teaching beginner piano at an after school program. Since college, I’ve been able to work in public schools around the NYC area, teach privately for several music institutions in Long Island, conducted hundreds of online video lessons, and have also been able to successfully build my own in-home roster of students as well. I like to remind students that in order to be better, they must be proactive, and that’s where practice plays a vital role in the development of any music students are learning.

METHODS USED

For beginner students, it’s often a little difficult to be able to maneuver around the bass or guitar when you haven’t first held one before. So, it can be a bit tricky in the beginning to get your hands working the right way, and pacing yourself through the adaptation of your hand to the neck of either instrument is essential. So, lots of finger exercises are done and getting the fingers working by playing melodies to familiar tunes is helpful as well. For older students, I like to know what your general interests are, musically. Whether it’s bands or singers, we can start learning some of your favorite songs to listen to, as that always makes learning our instrument more fun.

LESSON STYLE

I believe that the process of learning an instrument should be fun and easy, never like a chore. Always being motivated and excited to play your instrument helps with achieving your musical goals. Whether that motivation/inspiration comes from listening to a song, or in the moment during a lesson, it’s important to listen to that moment of inspiration to motivate you to get ready to learn something new on your instrument. Your energy in wanting to learn also plays a part as well. Being patient will always help with progress.

Having the privilege to work with Andre is exactly that, a privilege. His experience makes him the best in the business. Andre is someone I look up to in every aspect. What he brings to the table is so unique and specialized. How fluid and natural he is on his instrument is so admirable, he speaks through his bass. His ability to adapt and improvise on the spot makes him fit in to literally any situation making him so versatile. Any style or genre he’s got down. Andre has taught me so much about music and being a professional. His patience and just over all professional attitude makes him great for everyone. Through working with him, he has become one of my favorite musicians. Not only to work with but to learn from CONSTANTLY. Andre has taught me so much over the years. Thank you for everything you have taught me and everything you continue to teach me.
