Overview:
I am a passionate and motivated instructor who has had a love for music since I was young. I graduated in 2008 from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) with a Bachelor's in Music Education, and again in 2010 with a Master's in Music Education. While attending my Junior year in college, I performed at Carnegie Hall as a member of the National Wind Ensemble. I have also had the pleasure of performing and touring with UNCG's Wind Ensemble. I have taught private flute lessons for the past 6 years. I enjoy teaching students of all ages and skill levels.
EXPERIENCE
I taught private flute lessons for the past 6 years at Quarter Note Music and Instruction in Apex when I was living in North Carolina. I always encourage my students to practice on a regular basis because it will help them develop a passion for music. Motivation for playing is key to helping students enjoy music, and they will be eager to learn more. At the end of every semester, I encourage all of my students to perform in recitals to show off what they have learned and show how much they have progressed. This helps them feel good about their accomplishments. Through the year, I also encourage my students to enter in to All County and All District competitions.
METHODS USED
I always have my beginning students start with Rubank's Elementary Methods book for flute. This helps them develop basic music and playing skills. Once my students have developed the fundamentals of playing the flute, I will then introduce solo repertoire to continue developing and learn new skills. I typically teach Classical repertoire, but also encourage students to play music that they like. I like to find out what styles of music my students enjoy and incorporate these styles in learning. I motivate my students at every lesson so that they can enjoy playing and feel happy about their accomplishments. Music should be fun!
LESSON STYLE
Nothing makes me feel better than seeing one of my students so passionate about music. Every student learns at their own pace so I guide my instruction according to the individual student. At the end of every lesson, I write down in a practice book/log the exercises and repertoire that needs to be focused on during that week before the next lesson. This keeps the student on track to progress and gives them the responsibility and motivates themselves to practice. Students thrive when they feel a sense of accomplishment so I always acknowledge these accomplishments with every student.
