2013 - Seneca College Graduated with Honors

Overview:

I was born and raised in Bogota, Colombia, I have a degree in Jazz performance from the City College of New York (B.Mus.), and recently graduated from a M.Mus. at William Paterson University on a full academic scholarship. My undying love for the music has taken me from Colombia to Canada, and to New York City, and granted me the opportunity to share the stage with world-class musicians like Al Foster, Will Vinson, Pat LaBarbera, Steve Wilson, Marco Panascia, and Jonathan Kreisberg among many others. I have been fortunate to perform in festivals and venues such as the Montreal Jazz Festival, TD Toronto Jazz Fest, Aaron Davis Hall, Cornelia Street Café, Zinc Bar, Shapeshifter Lab and many more.

EXPERIENCE

I began teaching privately in Colombia and continued throughout my entire college experience. I've been a part of music schools for years, both as a student and faculty, and that experience has shown me that every student is different and as such the teaching must adapt. I have explored multiple avenues to connect with my students and firmly believe professors should be guides and mentors, more than fill the students with knowledge that they are later supposed to sort out themselves. In my lessons students are encouraged to follow their own compass, as musical tastes are entirely personal and develop at a unique pace.

METHODS USED

If the student relates to the material, everything will come much easier. I usually begin with music the student likes, and often use that same piece to pivot into learning drum notation. Once the student grasps the concept behind rhythmic notation and subdivision, presenting them with additional, more complex material is simple and becomes increasingly more rewarding! For younger students presenting them with drum notation as simple number counts and times where 2 or more instruments play simultaneously has worked wonderfully in my experience.

LESSON STYLE

One of the greatest sources of joy and exhilaration I have experienced throughout my teaching career occurs every time one of my students performs, and I get to witness the hard work and determination they have implanted into their playing. Every time they smile while playing their instrument is the single most rewarding feeling I have encountered in my years as a teacher, and I relish the opportunity to bask in that feeling every chance I get. I fully aim to provide students with a safe space where their questions are heard, and their concerns addressed. My students are free to explore the concepts they find most exciting about music, while at the same time earning a place within the context of music itself, and do so with technique that adapts to their own bodies and styles.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
