I'm a guitarist and songwriter who's passionate about guitar and music. I love music and would love to be a part of your musical journey. My formal education is in biology and counseling psychology, but I've been playing guitar, writing and recording music for years. My counseling education and experience has helped me to be really good with people and has helped me to try and bring out the best in people and to bring out their gifts. I grew up listening to 90's alternative rock and still have a soft spot for that music. I also love Radiohead and bands that are less guitar heavy and use more electronic sounds. My passion and taste for music is broad, and I would seek to help you in whatever style/type of music that moves you.
I got my first guitar around age 16. I've been more focussed on guitar and music since around 2008 where a buddy and I started a music project. I now have a recording setup in my house and have written many songs.I also have experience playing in a church band. Music is for me more than something I do, but something I'm passionate about and get life from.
If you're a beginner, I can start out with the very basics. I can teach you how to tune your guitar, helpful ways of holding it. I have material that I can provide that can give beginning exercises to help dexterity and practice in moving around your guitar and playing notes. As you progress I can provide slightly more difficult exercises to keep you on track towards improving. Also, if you're a beginner, towards the beginning I can teach you some basic chords so early on you can produce some music and play some simple songs. As you progress or for more intermediate players I can teach how to put the pieces together to play more complex songs or to create your own songs. Are you an intermediate player who can play different chords or bar chords, but don't know how to combine them into a song that sounds good together? I can teach you how to play in different keys so that your chords can complement each other and work together. I can also tie in keys to scales which will help you to be able to solo to and improvise over music. I can also teach theory so that you have the understanding of what you are learning, which can help translate into further learning on the guitar. The learning sequence could look something like: learning the fretboard and some basic playing exercises, learning major and minor chords, learning scales and theory of scales and how this relates to playing in different keys, from scales learning triads and how from the scale chords are constructed, being able to see the chords of a song or to hear it and be able to determine what key it's in and therefore how you can play with or over it, then learning pentatonic scales which can be a method of soloing, and finally chord substitution and reharmonization. Recording: In any part of the learning process, if a student want to be able to listen to something the've played or learned (a song the've learned, a song they've written, simply a jam the've written or explored) I can bring my recording gear and can record them playing. This can be fun to have for themselves but also to share with others as you're on your musical journey. If someone wants to write a full song with vocals and drums I can record vocals and can help with putting some drums (from the computer) to it as well.
I love music and would seek to help others' love and passion for music to grow. Your goals are very important to me. Do you want to learn the basics so you can play along with some of your favorite songs? Cool. Do you want to be able to play in a band? Great. Do you want to be able to write and compose your own music? Sweet. Whatever drives you, is what is important to me. I see the time as a service I'm offering and therefore where you are at, what direction you want to go, what songs you may want to learn, what moves you, is what I'm there to foster and support. Of course, if you want some direction, I can help with that as well.
