What I like to do is find out what my students know about music and then work from there. For instrumental I start with basics and play through scales to see how they play and how they can improve. For students that are younger or completely new to music, we would start with very basic general music terms and would become very close to the instrument of choice knowing the parts, how sound works with the instrument and how to properly play the instrument (close to the Suzuki method). my instructions are easy to follow no matter the age or ability level. I truly feel that meeting the students where they are at. At the first lesson I would bring the music necessary for lesson and get to know them. I would introduce solo repertoire and teach notes and musicianship through these lessons. I think that given the opportunity ALL students can succeed. This is done through repetition and practice. For beginning students who are children, I believe that Essential Elements and Standard of Excellence are more than sufficient resources. Focus will be given to proper embouchure, airstream, and tongue position as this will help the player avoid future, repetitive injuries. Intermediate students will work from Ferling’s 48 Famous Studies and Marcel Mule’s 18 Exercises after Solidifying scales is also essential for intermediate students.
