What I like to do is find out what my students know about music and then work from there. For instrumental I start with basics and play through scales to see how they play and how they can improve. In Seattle Public Schools, we use Standard of Excellence. I also add other materials as the student advances such as scales, etudes, and finger and rhythm exercises. My teaching experience dates back to high school, I was the section leader in both Wind Ensemble and Jazz 1, so running the sectionals I had to have a proficient understanding of the style and instrument to relay that information to the other members of the section. This continued through my undergraduate degree and evolved into coaching jazz combos and leading other groups. I started playing the alto saxophone in 5th grade and immediately fell in love with making music and sharing it with others. . I love to perform in concert bands, jazz bands, saxophone quartets, small chamber groups, and as a soloist. I currently play with the Mount Vernon Community Band, Cedar Rapids Municipal Band, and have been a guest soloist with a local high school choir.
