My teaching experience dates back to my pre-college/ post high school days where I was a volunteer director of a community ensemble in Jamaica. This opportunity opened doors for me to teach music theory and private saxophone and flute lessons in a community based project that was geared towards using music for social development and change in the inner city youth. I eventually moved on to the college setting where I served as a Graduate Assistant who had the responsibility of providing private and supplemental lessons to students who were enrolled in the University, all while operating a private studio of my own. My methodological procedures are determined solely on the level of the student and their performance ability. Oftentimes I tailor lessons that ive created in my past to create lesson plans for individual students. I oftentimes use action research methods in helping me determine whether or not the teaching method that is being used in the lesson is effective for the student receiving lessons. No matter what, I try to foster personal artistry as a primary goal for my students. That means that they should leave my lessons with one step closer to playing the type of music they want, whether it's in a band class or on stage with a jazz group. I start by teaching the fundamentals and making sure that the student has basic competency in the instrument and in general music knowledge to begin creating music by themselves. Read More
