For beginner students I will utilize either the "Alfred's Basic Piano Library" or "Faber - Hal Leonard's Piano Adventures" with the particular books selected to fit the student's age and skill level. I also enhance lessons by integrating scale pattern practice as well as exploration with simple boogie-woogie bass patterns; encouragement to sing and play where the lessons provide such an arrangement; and tinkering creating very simple melody lines and lyrics. I always ask students, both young and old, if they have goals they would like to work towards in lessons, and I then tailor lessons to help students achieve their goals. I listen to a students interests as well, and incorporate more into the lessons that will motivate and keep lessons fun, whether that is adding in time for composition/songwriting, learning how to play pop chords on the piano, or mixing in Disney/appropriate pop songs as well as classical and musical theater selections! For the very beginners, I like to use Essential Elements 2000 or Standard of Excellence Book. Depending on the student's development the next step will be H.L Clarke's Technical Studies. After this, I would find easy music that the student can identify with and be interested in, such as Disney books, Harry Potter,etc. For the more advanced high school students, they will also use Clarke's Technical Studies, Arban's Complete Conservatory Method for trumpet, and Rubank Method Books which come in Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced levels.
