I am a sixth semester student at Berklee College of Music, dual majoring in saxophone performance and jazz composition, and have studied with many inspiring professors as well as learned from many amazing educators. Since entering Berklee I have been able to not only study the material and concepts, but I have also gotten to study professors and how they educate students of all different backgrounds, all different levels of understanding, and how they navigate teaching a class with students who are all at different stages and levels of grasping material. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. For any of my new students I like to begin with getting to know them. This way I can decide on how it would be best for me to teach that specific person. Whether if I should speak to student A more stern or more friendly. Depending on the person I decide on how to go by my lesson of the day. I have learned by personal experience and thanks to my student observing classes that I fully comprehended that not just because a student doesn't grasp the lesson as fast as the rest of the class, it does not mean the student is lazy or anything negative. I usually ask several questions first, about your goals in participating with music. I want to encourage friendly competition, to have fun and to decide how competitive you may choose to be later. Most people don't want to be super competitive, but many are talented to do so. Most people are in music for the overall enjoyment of it, and some realize friendly competition is a win-win. Being super competitive is not for everyone, and I don't blindly encourage it. Read More
