I am a fully-certified music educator of 20 years: I have taught both middle school band & choir to at-risk youth for 3 years, as well as elementary music at a private Christian academy for an additional 3 years. With the saxophone as my principal instrument of 35 years now, I also play many other instruments that I teach, including: Piano, Violin, Drums, Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, and Trombone. My main goal and teaching is to inspire self motivation and make it fun! I like to pick songs that are fun to play and challenging at the same time depending on what level you are at that time. By doing this I think keeping the instrument out and not in the closet is a good start that way if the inspiration hits you and you want to play it is within your reach "guitar stand and wall hangers are ideal" and not in the case the put away " Out of sight out of mind" I suggest buying a music stand for your instruments and or wall hangers which seem to work very well as a display and also so the instrument is within your reach. By giving piano lessons, all kinds of music knowledges should be taught. I prefer focus on both performance skills and the art/music knowledge in general. Homework is always needed because being able to play piano is the goal of the students.I will have my students practice etude, sonata/sonatina,polyphony pieces and modern pieces at the same time. For piano beginning students, I usually start with the Alfred Book series. This is a really fun way for the piano students to grasp the fundamentals and learn how to independently move each finger at different times. As the student progresses, I try to find out what kind of style they enjoy playing and advise which books to purchase next.
