Each lesson they take home a blank staff paper in which they write specific notes and rhythm patterns on during the week. They learn to write and read their music very well, and it is fun to do. They of course are rewarded at their lesson for bringing back their papers. I have just started opening up to the whole new world of music out there on you tube. My teaching experience started 5 years ago. I was a senior in high school and was teaching a beginning student the trombone. Throughout the past 5 years I have continued to teach students when I was able to. I encourage regular practice and maintaining a consistent schedule. I always say 10 minutes a day is better then 30 minutes every 3 days. For flute, clarinet, and saxophone I generally start with the methods that they use in band, for example Yamaha method and I decide after the first few lessons what they need help with and assign more music from there. I also talk to the students about what kinds of music they like to play and try to find music that has cd accompaniment making it fun to play at home and also developing their listening skills.
