I find great satisfaction and enjoyment working with music students of all ages and ability levels. The reward comes from seeing the development of a student to the point where they are accomplishing wonderful things with their musical ability. I graduated from BYU in 1989, with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music Education. I have been fortunate to perform with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the Minnesota Mormon Chorale. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 8 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 5 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. When they finish their level books, they receive a composer statue. And at each recital they receive a special certificate. We have a recital in the Fall and Spring and play at a nursing home for Christmas. I am a member of OMTA and so we play a memorized piece in the Fall festival and for junior and state auditions in the Spring. The biggest accomplishment to me is helping students of all ages fall in love with music just like I did as a child. Students do not need to perform infront of others if they truly wish not to, as long as they enjoy what they are doing. It is important that a student continues to progress during their time with me, however this will be at their own pace. Finding out what goals each student has and what inspires them in order to tailor my instruction to each student is critical to the students development in music. Read More

For piano students, I like to use the Alfred Books. They have books for young beginners, older beginners, through adults. The books also have songs the students know, and additional books with a variety of styles. They are written in a clear, manner that explains new skills and moves slowly so students won't get discouraged.
