As a teacher I offer a common sense approach to teachingall instrumentsto students of all ages. For students who are new to playing; I focus first on the mechanics of playing, getting their mind to respond to what the body to best of their ability. Along the way they learn to read and understand written music, and just as important, how to play with and forother musicians. They learn to trust their ears and instinct, and develop the ability to create their own style and identity. Read More

I am a University of North Texas graduate. I studied with Jim Riggs and Dr. Eric Nestler and played in the top lab bands and classical ensembles while attending school. I later moved to NYC where I started my professional playing career. I lived there for 14 years playing with several music ensembles and studied with Bill Blount on clarinet and Lorrie Glaze on piano. I played on Broadway musicals like Avenue Q and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown. Read More

My teaching style is very unique in that its based off improvisation and ear training with music theory lessons. Having just one of the three is a great skill, but developing an ability to read, play and improvise music is what, in my opinion, makes a great musician. I acknowledge hard work and dedicate myself to developing that passion for music in each lesson. Having a desire to get better is essential as it will take time, practice and patience. Read More

Using a metronome will help with students on building the rhythm foundation and once they get to a comfortable level with fundamentals I will have students bring in music that is a higher level to work on to keep their flute playing fun. I always encourage students to bring in any band music as well. I like to make out an adjustable "curriculum" to give to parents so they can also keep track of what the students will be working on each lesson or looking forward to if the student wants to prepare for the next lesson (based on ability). For Band students I normally use the method used in class or I will use the Ed Suede Band method. I like this method because it starts out very basically and simply and gradually increases in difficulty. Voice students must first pass an Audiation test which is essentially a test of their sense of pitch. From there I begin with vocalizations followed by singing materials. I have composed my own First Studies for Guitar. Read More
