I always encourage students to find contemporary books with fun songs to try out, like a Disney series or pop songs. In addition, for those who are in school band, I highly recommend they bring in their materials at the beginning and have a lesson or two on them, especially if they have any solos or auditions pending. I currently start teaching piano from the Faber method books, as they encourage the students move around the piano using different fingerings. We play flash card games, and sometimes use music apps to help learn the notes on the staff, while playing clapping ryhythm games most lessons. I also teach from the alfred method books as well as the alfred adult series. Congregational hymnplaying is taught using the students' own church hymnal, encouraging the student to start playing in church through preludes, eventually leading into playing for the congregation as ready. I graduated with a music degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania on piano in 2020, with secondary focuses on flute and organ. I grew up in Elderton and I have been in love with music since before I could read. I have had various opportunities throughout high school and college to perform on piano and flute. My teaching style emphasizes areas that the student enjoys playing, as well as method books and technique exercises that will advance their playing. Developing and solidifying core concepts in lessons is more important to me than speeding through exercises in a book, and I always stress the importance of doing things right before moving on. I encourage my students to practice at their own pace, however I always stress that picking up the instrument for even just ten minutes a day for a week is better than one day for an hour. Read More
