I began teaching percussion immediately after high school. While attending EKU, I helped my former high school by teaching the percussion section during the marching band season. I taught the section every year for about 12 years before being hired as a full-time teacher and becoming the assistant director of the band. It just has to be a path that demonstrates great playing. If you're more disciplined about your playing than I am, you will enjoy your lessons. My approach to teaching is to make sure my students have fun while they're learning and growing. It's important for students to learn to have fun while playing the same scale or rudiment over and over, and I think this is entirely possible!
