I began teaching percussion immediately after high school. While attending EKU, I helped my former high school by teaching the percussion section during the marching band season. I taught the section every year for about 12 years before being hired as a full-time teacher and becoming the assistant director of the band. Again, analyzing some music together that the student is interested in is part of the process. Music theory will be discussed! Theory will not dominate the conversation unless the student shows a high interest for this. Some basic theory as it related to chords, chord progressions, scales, and music in general will certainly be beneficial. I will say, if you are wanting to learn how to "shred" like Eddie Van Halen or some of the hard rock/metal guys, I won't be much help unless a music theory discussion is needed. Read More

My approach to teaching is to make sure my students have fun while they're learning and growing. It's important for students to learn to have fun while playing the same scale or rudiment over and over, and I think this is entirely possible!
