I began teaching drum lessons part time when I was a sophomore in college. I taught a diverse group of students of all ages and with different skill levels out of a small musical instrument store. I also taught percussion to groups of middle and high school students helping them prepare for concerts and district solo and ensemble competitions. I quickly learned that students all have very different musical interests and reasons for learning how to play the drums. Read More

My main philosophy is that every student is different and should be treated accordingly. The methods I use are specifically tailored to each student and can be methods that I have learned or developed myself. I start students off by asking them collect ideas about their instrument and the music they enjoy. From that point, I begin to simultaneously teach technique and musicianship in relation to their expressed interests. The key to my teaching method is that I ask difficult questions and then I give the student time to think and develop an answer. Read More

My teaching style is very focused on the student's desire to learn what they want. Very early into taking on a new student, I try to find what/who inspires them. Doing so allows me to tailor my teaching to each individual student. I also like to have 3 main "small improvement" objectives for each lesson. There's improvement on what we did during our last lesson, improvement during the lesson with something new I will introduce, and improvement for our next lesson with something I will give to the students to work on themselves after our lesson. For percussionists and drummers starting out, they'll start with just a practice pad and a pair of sticks, and the first "Alfred's Drum Method" book. From there, after a bit of progression, I'll add material based on the student's interests. For starting pianists, I'll start with the first book in the Essential Elements "Piano Theory" series. These books tend to move quickly, so it helps beginning students get a lot accomplished right away. Read More
