For young students, typically I start with fundamental basics of playing. I introduce these commonly 'dull' aspects by casting an interesting light on them. By facilitating common, rudimentary, aspects of playing, it opens up the avenues for improvisation and creativity. Often I teach out of lesson books, typically Hal Leonard or some other popular publishers. All of my students receive custom lessons, written by myself, mixed in with standard lesson books. Since I have always believed that "one size does not necessarily fit all" I have found this to be a better approach to rapidly putting my students at the next level. Being able to read charts in marching percussion and drumset, in particular, will put you in a position of great demand when it comes to begin your professional career.
