Our music lesson students will have the opportunity to take lessons from the comfort of their own home or in one of the teachers studios. Careful attention is placed on each student to ensure a custom lesson plan. Our music teachers understand that every student has different needs and abilities and therefore the lessons will be planned with that knowledge in mind.

Learning isn't a photocopy process which means a lot of the learning process is a responsibility of the student. I view my job as a teacher is to 1) make sure the student isn't getting overwhelmed, 2) hold the student accountable for their learning, and 3) guiding students through experiences that will facilitate their learning. My goals as a teacher are to 1) bring students to the highest level of technical ability they are able to attain, and 2) develop in the student the highest level of musicianship possible through theory and ear training. As I mentioned, I like going at the pace of the student in lessons. If we are struggling in an area of playing/singing, then we will focus on that area until we've gotten better at it. Everything in music is related to each other, so I make sure my students understand that while we may be working on, for example, dynamics, that does not mean that anything else we already learned does not apply. I have most students start with Essential Elements for fundamentals. Then I progress to solo and duet repertoire when the time a student is able to grasp counterpoint and rhythm well. Adult students can often move faster due to being able to understand the math behind music. I also try to incorporate theory and history and culture with my lessons. For piano, I use Bastien for my younger students and Farber and Bastien for my older students. Read More

Watching my students develop and grow as musicians is one of the greatest joys I have in life. I use positive encouragments while also challenging students to continually improve. Music making is not a race, so I allow students to develop naturally and at their own pace. I try to inspire, encourage, and motivate through leading by example. While at ONU, I was a member of the Wind Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, Marching Band, and Woodwind Ensemble. I was given opportunities to perform in these various ensembles on clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone, and flute. I served as the principal clarinet of the Wind Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra, Instrumental Music Librarian, Wind Orchestra Ensemble Manager, and Wind Orchestra Assistant Conductor.
