Instruments: Violin, Cello, Viola

During my 15 plus years of teaching violin, I worked in a variety of class settings (public and private school as well as in private offsite lessons), using different teaching styles with a wide range of student levels (beginners to undegraduates) and ages (3 to adult). Through these experiences, I have become very flexible and improvisational in my educational approach, and am open to learn and adjust to new and uncertain work environments, perhaps more easily than most. After my studies and experience working as an orchestra director for middle and high school orchestras in Indiana, I learned a lot more about teaching viola, cello and bass. I'm all about the students having fun while learning to play. A non-judmental enviroment is also very important.

Each student is different, therefore each strategy varies.  However, my overall goal is to have the student enjoy learning how to play their instrument as well as help grow their passion and love for music.  Before I begin teaching a student I always ask what they wish to achieve with their instrument.  This way, I believe, is best to plan accordingly for each individual student.

My teaching style is dependent on active involvement for all parties involved. For this reason, I encourage parents of young students to sit in on the lesson so they can understand how I want the student to practice and prepare for the coming lesson. For other students, I will have them keep a practice log in which I can write the expectations for the coming lesson and "assignments" to be completed. Developing a student's comprehension of music and playing ability is not a "one style fits all" task, so I tend to choose the right teaching style based on the student; one student may need a very sympathetic and caring teacher to encourage their progression, while another may need a tough teacher to challenge them to practice more often. Whatever the case, by actively practicing between each lesson and by carefully listening during a lesson, my students can achieve any goal they set their minds to.

I use a Practice based incentive program to develop healthy musical habits. I listen to the goals each student wants to achieve and set up steps to accomplish the goal. While in a lesson I establish basic musicianship, while developing and shaping a performers self image. Warm encouragement and helpful criticism are used to create a safe testing ground to forge and hone new skills.
