I asses ability based on hearing pitches and singing them back. I work out of the Suzuki method books not using it strictly. Kummer and Feuillard for duet sight reading and Schoeder for etudes. Students ability is measured by how many hours they practice which I give specific instructions on how long they should work with each exercise. I want to figure out what inspires a student. We will hone in on personal goals and use that as a basis for instruction. Motivation is key! I typically use a style of traditional classical instruction. Including scales, studies, and repertoire. I teach sight reading and ear training. I use memorization, and critical listening skills.
