I like to take each of my students on a case-by-case basis. I learn a little about them, what their goals in taking lessons are, and what kinds of music the like to play. When I reach for a method book, it is usually Mel Bay or Berklee Music Press for electric bass and guitar, or The Simandl Method for upright bass. Lessons need to be fun but at the same time the student needs to feel like they're making real progress. What I do is slow down whatever we're working on to a manageable pace for the student then slowly speed things up in a way that is comfortable for the student while at the same time providing new challenges and goals for the student to work toward. My teaching style is generally laid back. I believe that a student will only work as hard as they want to, and I have little control over that. I focus more on finding out what will make the student want to work hard, rather than forcing them to study something that does not interest them. It's all about getting the student to have a positive musical experience.
